My process
I initiated and led the project from start to finish, from getting my proposal approved by the regional water agency to budgeting, fundraising, and negotiating prices with different nurseries, to hosting the tree planting event that involved 15 volunteers.
Above all, this process has taught me the importance of communication skills as a leader.
01
Developed project proposal
I worked closely with the park ranger supervisor to develop a project proposal, including recommending the planting location, the species, the size, and the number of trees to plant.
02
Developed project plan
After my proposal was accepted, I began to research nurseries to purchase the trees and planting materials from. I reached out to a couple of nurseries to compare prices. I researched best practices for planting oak trees and determined what materials and supplies I needed to either purchase or borrow. I also planned for other logistics, such as when to plant the trees and how many volunteers I would need to recruit. This phase involved a lot of communication to ensure that my project beneficiary were kept in the loop and onboard with my plan.
03
Fundraised
After estimating the cost of the trees and materials, I started fundraising by soliciting donations from the local nursery, reaching out to friends and family, and setting up a GoFundMe page for my project.

04
Led project execution
On a fine Labor Day weekend, I hosted and led a 2-day tree planting event. Prior to the event, I sent out an email reminder to all the volunteers regarding their shifts, proper attire, and what to bring on the work day. I started the day with a safety briefing followed by step-by-step instructions on the tasks. It was a rewarding experience to witness great teamwork among all the volunteers that made this project successful.
Together we had Leaf Legacy!
